I HAVE FOUND MY CALLING. It's been a long road to get to where I am today—a journey of sorts, that I now realize began the first time I picked up a paint brush when I was six years old. My Dad likes to tell the story of that time when I helped him paint our den. He brags of how I did all the base moulding and didn't get a drop on the wall or the carpet. I was just proud of the job I had done and enjoyed knowing that I contributed to making the house a better place to live. While I dipped into the retail world, and found myself making a good living at it, it was always this feeling of satisfaction to which I would return as I spent every minute of free time building fences and decks, laying tile, refinishing floors, and making furniture both for myself and for others.
After doing all my own renovations and extending my reach to friends and family, word spread of my craftsmanship. As I would get approached frequently by more and more people for custom projects, I decided it was time to focus my work life on doing something I was truly passionate about—combining style, environmental responsibility and honoring our past by giving it new life through my carpentry. In August of 2013, Benevolent Design Co. was born out of this very passion.
The undercurrent of everything I do at Benevolent Design Co. stems from my desire to give the customer exactly what they are looking for while leaving the least impact on the environment. Instead of cookie cutter replications from eras past, I travel across the mid-Atlantic states and hand-select interesting materials that have been deemed useless or forgotten, of which the character cannot be replicated by something new. Whether it is a piece of wood from the side of an abandoned house, a tree that fell down naturally, or a rusty barn roof that can be used to cover a wall, the character of these pieces bring life to your custom project.
My goal is simple—to give you custom pieces that not only work for you but speak to you. Every piece has a story to tell. Be benevolent!
